The shell you are going to wear, the Nassarius colombella, is not a simple ornament, and the infinite line of Miyuki beads that holds it is not a simple thread: it is the very first piece of jewelry in the history of the world, revisited by the high technicality of my workshop. 100,000 years ago, our hominid ancestors chose it as the first sign of distinction and the sacred, long before gold or precious stones. By wearing this creation like a talisman from another age, you are not wearing costume jewelry; you are reconnecting with an ancestral gesture, a fragment of eternity magnified by the high technicality of my workshop. My shells have nothing in common with other well-known and overexploited shells like the cowrie, which we have seen over and over again, everywhere. Here, you will find a selection of shells that make sense, and definitely not what everyone else already has.

Do you know why you are sold cowries and very rarely anything else?

​

Let's think about it together. Yes, it was used as currency at one time, it's true, just as the Nassarius colombella served as a medium of exchange, but what is its particularity that other shells don't have? It is the shell of intellectual laziness: it disintegrates quickly, loses the back of its shell, and this creates a space to pass a cord through to make a soulless necklace that anyone with an underdeveloped creative sense can sell you, and that you will see worn by everyone hahaha! If that is what you are looking for, then my advice is to do it yourself. It couldn't be simpler: you take a cowrie and a cord or chain that you pass through it, or you add a ring to connect the two, and presto, it's ready. But no, that is clearly not creation.

Why?

​

Because the definition of creation comes down to transforming a material, not just "passing one thing through another". That is merely assembly, and it doesn't make the created piece a designer jewel, nor does it make you a designer, nope! It's so trivialized that it even exists in plastic: a cheap plastic shell for a tacky piece of jewelry, shameful... You won't find that here. It already proliferates enough on the web, there's no need to stay on this site, I simply cannot bring myself to sell hot air, even if it's popular.

Why go against the grain?

​

Very good question, Linda Clarini! Because doing what everyone else does is boring, and because my research brought to light that people only wear this common shell because they aren't offered enough alternatives. Very few designers work with other species of shells, and most brands surf on the shape while forgetting the material... When you look for shell jewelry, you land on sites that sell jewelry in the shape of a shell hahaha! Because it is an ancient and difficult material to work with, so they sell you the shape, not the real natural shell. I love the idea of the shell as a jewel, the material is the shell. If you truly appreciate the beauty of shells, you need someone who transforms the material; drilling a shell is only the first step in the metamorphosis of this particular material.

We must respect it. Your shell is much older than you can imagine; nature took an incredible amount of time to create this superb element that everyone loves. The ocean created the shell, I shape it for you. It's up to you to add your touch via my craftsmanship, which will make your jewel a precious gift for yourself or a loved one, and that no one else will already have. I have therefore decided to introduce you to my exceptional shells and tell you about their finishes.

People often wonder which shells can be transformed into jewelry?

​

To tell the truth, all of them in my opinion: entrust me with your shell and I will make it a jewel like no other.

 

My shells are hand-gleaned. Some in France, and in this case, they are fragments, because it is strictly forbidden to collect whole shells (look it up, it damages the protected coastline, so it is regulated unless you collect them off the beach). Otherwise, they come from the Coral Triangle where an association supported by the brand trains locals to protect what is compared to the Oceanic Amazon, and which I call the cradle of the Colombella. There are all kinds. In terms of colors, my preference goes to creamy white, which contrasts superbly on tanned skin in summer or with the vibrant palette of Miyuki beads I use to sublimate my models, and the browns with white polka dots or white zebra stripes which are absolutely incredible: quite simply humanity's first ornament. Some fragments are thousands of years old; it is a moment of eternity to wear against you, magical! Whether the fragments are white, beige, blond, or brown, they are unique like us, no two are alike. It is yours, period.

In 2015, when I had the idea to create shell jewelry and even sculpt them, I was at "La Petite" beach in Capbreton with a friend, Céline. The idea was to try to drill them for a start (I quickly realized it wasn't easy hahaha!) and then find a way to make them as shiny as when you pick them up at the edge of the waves, you know? They gleam and shine in the sun, natural light reflects off them and brings out their natural colors. For me, that is the ultimate holiday signal: finding a magnificent shell and wanting to wear it as a piece of jewelry. Everything stems from there.

 

I spent six months finding the formula to apply a glaze that lasts over time, that is thin, where the natural shape of the shell remains, and that doesn't yellow like varnish or flake off. In fact, I advise against varnishing jewelry in general, and even less so shells, which are calcareous and therefore porous, making a very bad combination with varnish. I developed a specific recipe that allows the crystallization of the shells, bringing them protection and brilliance.

 

Let's go back. So I am in the South-West of France, facing the Atlantic, with my head full of ideas, and I needed to bring them to life without really knowing what I was getting into. The reality is that it is very difficult to professionally drill a shell because it is harder than you think: it has resisted an infinite amount of time against the Ocean, its barrels, its swell, its storms, its equinox tides, and the pressure of the depths to reach you. I often say: see it as a warrior from another time. It seems small and fragile to you hahaha, I guarantee you that is far from being the case. You would not survive what it went through so you could wear it as jewelry. It is as ancient as it is precious.

 

Its material is ultra-resistant, composed of thin layers with 95% minerals (calcium carbonate) and 5% organic matter (proteins and polysaccharides) that aggregate. Due to its long journey through time and space, it may have contracted microfissures invisible from the outside, causing it to break when you want to transform it. It is a delicate art; contrary to what is read everywhere, it requires patience and gentleness. The main component of a shell can be made up of three minerals: calcium carbonate (the base), calcite (the crystalline layer), and aragonite (mother-of-pearl). Then comes the organic part with conchiolin which consolidates everything so the shell is resistant, and finally, polysaccharides that structure the layers together.

The shell of your seashell has three layers:

 

• The outer layer (periostracum) which protects it from water acidity.

   

• The prismatic layer (vertical layers for solidity, the part I sculpt).

   

• The inner layer (hypostracum) made of mother-of-pearl against which the mollusk lodges. My next collection.

   

Wanting to learn how to sculpt them required a lot of patience and determination. I would like to introduce you to the ones whose fragments I glean in France and that I sculpt for you into initials, numbers, or into my 3 totems: the heart, the star, and the iconic surfboard.

FRANCE — The Atlantic Ocean (Silver Coast, Seignosse)

Wild gleaning of fragments polished by the swell. These local species, with nuances ranging from pure white to caramel and sand, are the absolute starting point of my profession as an Ocean Shaper.

 

• The Dog Cockle (Glycymeris glycymeris)

   

  • Profile: Extremely thick and robust bivalve.

     

  • Aesthetics: White or cream background, magnified by brown/caramel zebra stripes and spots.

     

  • The Workshop's Eye: This is my number one candidate. Once broken and rolled endlessly by the ocean, its fragments offer a smooth texture and incomparable beige tones.

     

• The Necklace Shell (Natica catena / Naticidae)

   

  • Profile: Snail-shaped shell, renowned for its great solidity.

     

  • Aesthetics: Light beige coat dotted with delicate reddish or caramel motifs.

     

• The Wedge Shell or Pignon (Donax trunculus)

   

  • Profile: Thinner bivalve, emblematic of the sandy stretches of the South-West.

     

  • Aesthetics: Superposition of colored bands alternating beige, white, and sometimes purplish touches.

     

• The Scallop & Queen Scallop (Mimachlamys varia / Pecten maximus)

   

  • The Workshop's Eye: The oldest fragments, worn to the bone by the undertow, reveal white and caramel hues of exceptional purity.

ASIA — The Pacific Ocean (The Coral Triangle, Raja Ampat)

 

Manual gleaning on wild reefs (Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia). Welcome to the Amazon of the Seas. This is where I select two fascinating species that I call my "graphic chocolates": pieces navigating between warm brown and deep black, contrasted with white.

 

• The Pyrene ocellata

   

  • Profile: Marine gastropod (Columbellidae family).

     

  • Size & Shape: Generally rounded shell, I select sizes from 0.6 to 1 cm.

     

  • Aesthetics: Chocolate brown background dressed with irregular white polka dots or zebra lines.

     

• The Nassarius colombella

   

  • Profile: Marine gastropod (Nassariidae family).

     

  • Size & Shape: Refined, slender, and pointed profile at the front, selected between 0.8 and 1.5 cm.

     

  • Aesthetics: Very dark background, almost black. The white dots are much finer and tighter than the Pyrene, and the zebra stripes are wider.

     

  • The Workshop's Eye: Often mistakenly confused with the Pyrene on the internet, the Nassarius nevertheless stands out with a much more distinguished and deep geometry (to be discovered in cross-section via the Analysis Workshop of my exhibition "The Metamorphosis").

To showcase the shells I select in a way never seen before, I prepare them (shape and glaze) just like one shapes surfboards, I sculpt them, and I crystallize them. My know-how is truly unique in the world; try as I might, I don't see other shells worked the way I do it. This has allowed me to be spotted by magazines like Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, and Caudalie—an international podium for my shells.

The Meeting of 3 Worlds: The Excellence of Miyuki Beads

Do you know Miyuki glass beads? Internationally renowned, they are pure excellence. They are the finest I use (1.5 mm diameter). Their model is the seed bead. I love its roundness, the colors stand out better, and I have never regretted leaving aside the Delica beads that everyone weaves. My concept is a pure, fine line with no beginning or end (there is no visible clasp). For me, it represents the horizon line that seems infinite, the one you see when you are lucky enough to face the ocean. Your gaze carries far; it opens my imagination.

 

I thread them one by one by hand with care and patience.

They are the natural element I need: the meeting of 3 worlds, all three at the peak of excellence:

 

• The timeless shells, the centerpiece.

   

• The Miyuki beads and their sublime hues, the link that unites the other two worlds.

   

• The precious metals, the glare of the sun on the barrels.

   

 

 

 

The history of high precision

It was the current president's grandfather, Hiroshi Katsuoka, who around the 1950s in Hiroshima province invented silver plating inside the hollow of the beads and launched the silver-line beads. Can you imagine the finesse of the work? My beads have a 0.60 mm hole! If you browse the online workshop-boutique, you will see my visuals: I am a fan of finesse in everything. What he invented is high precision; it couldn't help but charm me. The technique was then developed with the gold-line that I use (in 24K Gold) and plenty of colors protected inside the bead.

 

The ever-increasing number, the incredible shades that exist, and the quality of the work from the famous Japanese company make my heart skip a beat when I see them. It is a real pleasure to work with them. Everything is possible: whatever color you are looking for, you will find it, they have already invented it hahaha! The work is meticulous and requires excellent eyesight as well as dexterity. It's a game of patience, always ending with the great satisfaction of seeing the beads aligned.
