Tutorial: How to turn a seashell into a Charm or a Pendant?

How to make a seashell into a charm or a pendant? Forget about amateur DIY tutorials or craft guides that give cookie-cutter answers just to sell you pre-drilled shell beads. A natural seashell is a whole shell or a fragment gathered on the beach, which is most likely your case, not a "shell bead" (...?! Besides, that doesn't even mean anything if you take the time to think about it). And a jewelry lives at your pace and endures the bumps of daily life; attaching a seashell to it must be done professionally, even if you do it yourself. If you want your seashell (whether it's large, thick, or tiny) to survive life on a wrist, you need neither heat, violent vibrations, nor shocks to drill it. Therefore, your seashell deserves a pro method.
## 2. The Technique: Reverse drilling (My Studio secret)
What tools are specifically designed to drill clean and precise holes? My inside-out trick.
Take it from my expertise as a seashell jewelry designer since 2015: the only valid and specialized tool is a Dremel-style micro-drill equipped with a diamond bit. I'm not getting paid by them to advertise, they are simply the inventors of this rotary tool and therefore the best—the others just copy their brilliant idea. You need this tool because it combines power with a compact size, which was completely unprecedented before they invented it. Your movement must be gentle: it is the rotation that drills, not the pressure you apply.
The Ocean Shaper's trick (that's the job title I made up for myself): to turn a seashell into a charm with a removable lobster clasp or a pendant with a closed jump ring, the hole needs to be as discreet as possible. Since the smallest diamond drill bit is 2 mm, my secret is to drill from the back (the side hidden against the skin). The bit will exit on the front side, creating an extremely fine, clean hole with no cracks or chipping that will measure 1 mm, provided you don't force it and stop as soon as the shell is pierced. It's clean, neat, and professional.
Balance: Watch out for where you put the hole! On a piece of jewelry, a shell that isn't centered properly will tilt if you place it wrong. Online recommendations suggest putting a piece of tape or making a dot with a dark pen to aim properly... Frankly, that's useless and pointless; it's supposed to prevent you from slipping. Here is why you don't need it: every shell has ridges even if they aren't necessarily visible to the naked eye, so your diamond drill bit can still slip, especially if you make the mistake of using a regular power drill instead of a Dremel. A drill is too heavy to handle; you need something manageable and lightweight. You are indeed likely to slip if you hold your drill with two hands without holding the shell—whether big or small, it will slide around from the vibrations. So, the foolproof method is not to hold the Dremel; you need to hold the shell.
If you place it on a board and put your Dremel right above the shell, it won't be secured and will slide around—either from the weight of your tool or due to vibrations that will make both the board and the shell move. So, you need to mount your Dremel on its vertical suspension stand so that you have both hands free; that is the secret, and it is much safer this way. This setup is the safest for two reasons: 1) you have both hands free and don't run the risk of the tool slipping out of your hands, and 2) it allows you to hold the shell firmly and therefore aim precisely at the exact spot where you want the hole, making it impossible for the shell to move. You can drill with precision without any risk of missing your hole.
And as a bonus, your hands don't absorb the vibrations; over time, that's dangerous because you lose sensitivity and risk being less precise when you absolutely need to be. Reminder: it is not the force of your tool that pierces the shell, it's the fact that the Dremel gradually removes tiny pieces of the shell, so it requires precision and gentleness.
