The myth of acidic skin oxidizing your jewelry
Listen closely: yes, our skin has a more or less acidic pH, and that is perfectly normal. It's our body's natural barrier. However, contrary to what you see everywhere on the web, what is completely FALSE and unacceptable is making you feel guilty because your bracelet, ring, or necklace turned black, by blaming your physiology!
The costume jewelry industry loves to use the "acidic skin" excuse to justify the oxidation of its cheap brass and the wear and tear of its famous "fine gilding" over low-end copper. Oh, fine gilding, how about that! It sounds so cute, "gilded with fine gold." I bet it'll sound a lot less dreamy once we see what it actually means.
A true designer piece of jewelry is crafted to withstand human biology (and even be passed down), not to surrender at the first sign of heat.

Why Does My Jewelry Tarnish and Turn Black?
If it were simple, you wouldn't be searching for why your €125 chain turned black, or why your pretty gold-plated ring became dull and gray, right? Everything is connected: oxidation is the chemical cause, and the blackening (or greening) is merely the visual symptom.
Here is what no one explains to you, so you can finally understand these disappointing and inevitable phenomena:
1. Returning to the earth (Thermodynamics)
In nature, in their wild state, pure metals barely exist (except for gold). They are found as ores, mixed with oxygen or sulfur. When we make a piece of jewelry, we force the metal to become pure and shiny. Scientifically, it is therefore in a state of "stress." Its only natural goal is to become a mineral again. Oxidation is simply the metal "breathing" its environment (oxygen, pollution, sweat acidity) to return to the earth.
2. The sea of electrons (The exchange with the skin)
Under a microscope, a metal isn't an inert block. It's a network of crystals bathed in a "sea of free electrons." When a non-noble metal (like brass) touches your body's natural acidity, an electrochemical reaction occurs. The metal exchanges electrons with you: it lives, it reacts, and that is what creates the famous black or green stain.
"Noble" metals vs "Base" metals
This is the official chemistry vocabulary, and it explains everything:
Base metals (Copper, Brass, Zinc) - Destructive oxidation: They are highly reactive. They oxidize frantically and react to your epidermis's pH, creating verdigris that stains the skin. They eventually return to dust.

The industry's shameful secret: The "fine gilding" scam
The problem with classic plated or fine gold-gilded jewelry isn't oxidation to begin with: it's fatal wear and tear.
The layer of gold or silver is so thin that it wears off and vanishes in a snap. You're drawn in by a seemingly affordable price, but it's a terrible calculation: as soon as the jewelry is worn, the gold or silver disappears. Buying jewelry that doesn't last ends up costing a fortune!
Let me expose the micron scam. You should know it takes 1000 microns to make 1 millimeter. So, having "3 microns" on your fine gold-gilded jewelry is like they sprayed a tiny bit of gold on it. Before attempting a desperate rescue, forget these catastrophic ideas you see everywhere on the web:
Clear nail polish. It's an aesthetic disaster. The polish yellows, chips, clumps up, and traps moisture, which accelerates the rust! The polish suffocates the metal, totally counterproductive. Jewelry that needs this isn't jewelry; a piece of makeup-covered brass, industrial or not, at €125: it's a rip-off.
Toothpaste or baking soda: Rubbing oxidized jewelry with these is the worst mistake. They are powerful abrasives. You will permanently rip off whatever little gold or silver was left on it.
